How does geothermal heating and cooling work?
A geothermal system doesn’t actually create any heating or cooling energy. Instead, it harnesses, extracts and redistributes the sun’s energy that’s already waiting underground. Absorbing nearly half the sun’s energy as it hits the Earth’s surface, the ground holds a consistent temperature just below the frost line.Geothermal systems tap into this energy with an “earth loop” system of underground pipes that absorb stored heat and carry it indoors for distribution as needed. The versatile process is reversed during the cooling season, pulling heat from indoors, through the loop, and transferring it into the cooler earth.
What makes a geothermal system different from a traditional one?
No fossil fuels are burned to generate geothermal energy.
